As part of Foster Care Fortnight 2026 and this year’s theme, “This is Fostering”, we are sharing stories that show the lasting difference foster care can make in the lives of children and young people.
Ellie was nominated by someone who has watched her grow from the time she joined their family, to now living independently in her own home.
“I’d like to nominate my mum and dad’s former foster child, Ellie, who has now moved into her own home, although thankfully only 5 minutes down the road so we can still take her shopping.”
Ellie’s journey is one that has brought enormous pride to the people around her. Her nominator described watching her grow into the young woman she is today as one of the greatest privileges of their life.
“She came into our lives carrying so much, and to see her now thriving, independent, and building a future for herself fills me with a level of pride that’s hard to put into words.”
One of Ellie’s biggest achievements has been getting a job. As the first person in her family to do so, this milestone carries a huge amount of meaning. It reflects the determination, resilience and courage she has shown in building a life for herself.
“Ellie is the first person in her family to get a job, something that may seem small to some people, but for Ellie it is absolutely huge.”
What makes Ellie’s story even more special is the work she has chosen. Ellie now supports young people with severe learning difficulties. When she explained why, she said she wanted to give those young people the same chance to thrive that she had been given herself.
For her nominator, that moment said everything about the person Ellie has become.
“To take her own experiences and turn them into kindness, patience, and support for others says everything about the incredible person she is.”
Ellie continues to work hard, run her own home, and give so much of herself to those around her. Even on difficult days, she keeps showing up.
Her story is also a reflection of the love, support and belief she received from the foster family who helped her see the worth and potential that had always been there.
“Ellie is proof of what love, support, and belief in someone can do.”
Ellie’s future is bright, and this is only the beginning. She has overcome so much, built her independence, and chosen a path rooted in care for others.
