Continuing to thrive at 75!

The CFT celebrate our 75th Anniversary!

In 1945, a visionary named Paul Field dreamt that all children would have the opportunity to live in a home where they
felt safe, supported and loved. After resigning from his role in a children’s home, Paul was determined to give children
who were no longer able to live with their own parents, a new chance at family. Initially taking 12 children into his own
home, Paul set about finding other couples who shared his vision and who were prepared to take up his innovative
approach and this was the beginning of non-profit organisation, The Children’s Family Trust (The CFT).

When Paul started The CFT, there were those who that his method would never work and he would struggle to find families who were willing to care for children who were not their own in the same way that he was. Well… it just goes to show that any dream can become a reality if you are dedicated to it and we are sure that Paul would be absolutely delighted to hear that The CFT is still alive and fully operational, 75 years after he started!

Over the years, our organisation has grown into a national agency providing safe and caring environments for hundreds of children within fostering families. For those of you who are regular supporters of us, you will know that in recognition of our 75th anniversary we were really looking forward to bringing all of our Foster Carers, staff and children together, to celebrate this momentous occasion. For those of you who may not know so much about us, we know that you will certainly be aware of the Coronavirus pandemic, which sadly put the majority of our celebration plans on hold!

Our main event was to be held in October 2020 and was to be a joyous celebration in the form of an Awards Ceremony, celebrating the achievements of our organisation and our wonderful fostering families. Unfortunately, due to social distancing and government guidelines, our gathering has had to be postponed and we are hopeful that this will be able to take place in Summer 2021 (fingers crossed!). In addition to our main event, we had also planned smaller ‘regional’ get togethers, which also had to be cancelled for the very same reason. Although we do feel very sad that we were unable to celebrate our anniversary on it’s actual ‘birthday’, the safety of our Foster Carers, staff and children remains our number 1 priority and we felt it was vitally important to cancel these events and keep everyone as safe as possible.

Despite the cancellation of these events, we still wanted to get all of our stakeholders involved in celebrating our 75th year, as this is a very special occasion for us and an achievement that everyone should be proud of… as after all, we couldn’t have got this far without all of our amazing fostering families. With the safety of everyone in mind, we began thinking of ways that we could still celebrate the anniversary and we were thrilled that so many people wanted to join us in marking this very special occasion!

The first thing that we did was for all of our children and young people.

We regularly run competitions throughout the year to give our children the opportunity to be creative, and the 75th anniversary seemed like another perfect opportunity to do this.

The theme for our 75th competition was brief, and we asked everyone involved to submit us their entries that related to CFT, our history or what we stand for today. The response to the competition was brilliant and our children and young people submitted some phenomenal pieces of art, poems and even some tasty treats! As always, the entries that we received were so INCREDIBLE that it made it very difficult for our CEO, Marina Mulholland, to pick a winner. We are delighted to announce that our winner was Adelaide, age 11, for her ‘real’ piece about fostering, and we also had a number of runners-up which can be seen on our Facebook Page!

In addition to our children’s competition, we also wanted to run an event that captured our regional carers and staff… and with COVID still out in full force… we opted for our very own CFT Bake Off! We asked each regional office to identify some people who wanted to take part in the Bake Off competition, with one entry being submitted per region. They were asked to present the cakes, along with a brief description of the meaning behind it, and we are once again pleased to report that we were ASTOUNDED with the entries. Each cake was very special in it’s own way and our judges, Trustees John, Valerie and Maggie, wanted all recognize all of the cakes (all of which can be seen here) for their own individual reasons. However, there could be only one winner… and we are pleased to announce that our South Central team won the competition for their collaborative cake efforts and beautiful meaning behind their entry… Congratulations!

We want to thank everyone who took part in our competitions for the 75th anniversary, and say another huge ‘Congratulations’ and ‘Thank you’ to all of our stakeholders on their hard work for helping us make it this far. Whilst our organisation reaching this milestone means that we have provided many successful placements to children in our long life-span, it also indicates that the need for foster placements is as great as ever and we are currently looking for people who are kind and resilient to care for children who may have faced great adversity. If you are interested in becoming a Foster Carer with us, please call us on 0300 111 1945 or visit our Become a Foster Carer Pages’.

Once again we want to say a huge thank you and remind you all how very important you are to us

and the success of our charity. We are confident that CFT will continue to help more children and young people for many years to come, and we look forward to reaching our 100th anniversary with you all!
