CFT Carers, staff and looked after children came together on 19th August 2018 to form a team entering the Reading Dragon Boat Race. The team was organized to raise money for the organisation and also raise awareness for Fostering, whilst having a fun day out!
It was an early start at 9.00 in Wokingham as the team had to register in time to participate. The team was made up of 5 members of staff and some of their family members, as well as 9 carers who came along with their children and 6 were willing to help row.
Some of our looked after children over the age of 12 were allowed to participate and loved the opportunity to be involved in the boat race. They were really excited and fully embraced the spirit!
Strictly Come Dancing Star, Debbie Mcgee, was running her radio show from the event and some of our staff and carers were interviewed by her on the air. We already had a stall set up for members of the public to come and have a chat with us, but the radio broadcast was another great way to spread the word of our organisation, so we would like to thank them for chatting with us.
Team CFT was one of the first to race and after a safety briefing, the team were given life jackets and paddles and were ready to go!
An instructor assiting in helping the boat with us helping get in some sort of order along with one of them team sat at the front with a big drum to help beat out a rhythm. As you can imagine, like contestants on Strictly, some of us had the natural rhythm and some didn’t!
Most of the team had never done anything like this before but all were definitely up for the challenge.
The team took part in 3 races across the day and improved on their times with each race. The team sadly didn’t win the race line up but did win on was a fantastic team spirit! The children that took part were incredible and really stepped up to the challenge – it was amazing to see them all working together as one supportive team.
The team laughed, got soaked and had the most fun day out, even staff member Tracy who hates water started off very nervously but by the end was shouting supportive comments to the rest of the boat! The carers all thought we should do it again!
We have enjoyed raising money for The CFT and you still have time to help us reach our target by donating here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cftsouthcentral
